Shared services "gaining momentum"

Shared services are gaining momentum as alternatives to 'big-bang' deals and joint ventures, one expert states.

Eric Bohl, author of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (Solace) Guide to Sourcing Make, Buy or Share?, says however good in-house services are, they could be cheaper and better through collaboration.

In an article for LocalGov.co.uk, he states that some evidence shows that impressive efficiency savings and service improvements can be achieved through shared services.

Mr Bohl believes that promising shared services are developed gradually and rely on high levels of trust between partners, rather than strict contracts or detailed service level agreements.

He adds that success depends on sustained commitment, specialist help and detailed project resources and reminds organisations entering into shared services agreements that they must not ignore governance regulations.

"Considerable effort is now being invested in shared services and imaginative new approaches are being developed," Mr Bohl comments.
